Shooting Near White House Leaves Suspect Dead After Exchange of Fire
The incident took place shortly after 6 p.m. local time near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House perimeter.
Authorities said an armed individual initiated the shooting after drawing a weapon from a bag.
"Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire," the agency said, adding that no law enforcement officers were injured.
The condition of the civilian who was hit remains unclear.
According to reports, the suspect has been identified as a 21-year-old man with prior encounters with law enforcement and a documented history of mental health concerns.
He had previously been charged after allegedly entering a restricted area near the White House earlier in July. Court records reportedly indicate that during that earlier incident, he claimed to be Jesus Christ and said he wanted to be arrested.
Officials confirmed that the US President was inside the White House at the time of the shooting, and that normal operations were not affected.
Media reports added that the President was working in the Oval Office with senior aides when the incident occurred and was later briefed on the situation by security officials.
